New Motorcycle Tires

Posted in Arizona, Harley-Davidson, Motorcycle, Motorcycle Maintenance, Motorcycle Tires, Motorcycles, Phoenix, Phoenix AZ on July 18, 2017 by DRF

In preparation for my upcoming 4000+ mile trip, I decided to have a new set of tires installed.  My old tires probably would have lasted another 2,000 miles or so, but I don’t want to have to stop somewhere along the trip and have it done.  My father told me a long time ago, he always made sure he kept good tires on his car since they’re so important.  Motorcycles even more so with only 2 wheels!

For anyone in the Phoenix, AZ area, I recommend this place, “Mototire“.  This is the second time I’ve used them.  Fast and friendly service.

I had an appointment at 9:00 am, and the tires were installed in about 45 minutes.  I had the original tires put back on, Dunlap.  Same tires I would have got at the dealer, except about $50 cheaper.  Plus as a bonus, Dunlap has a $50 rebate going on right now on the purchase and install of a set.

A whole lot of tread going on here!

Here’s the business card for Mototire.  This is NOT a paid endorsement or anything like that, I’m just sharing the information for the business that in my opinion provides a good service at a fair price.

Just putting a face to this motorcycle blog!

I usually ride alone on my motorcycle trips, so I don’t have many photos of myself.  Here’s one from my last ride out in Southern California.  I was on a ride along the Pacific Coast Highway.  This photo was taken in a cafe in Morro Bay, CA.

I’m Planning Another Ride – Over 4,000 Miles!

Posted in California, Harley-Davidson, Motorcycle, Motorcycle Helmet, Motorcycle Rides, Motorcycles, National Parks, Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), Trip Planning, Yellowstone National Park on June 28, 2017 by DRF

I’ve decided a route for this years summer motorcycle trip.

Over 4,000 miles, 6 National Parks and 8 States. (I can hardly wait!)

I plan on taking my 1 man tent and sleeping bag this trip.  Lot’s of state parks, etc. along the way.  At the end of each day I’ll look for a campsite to stay at.  I’m sure I’ll also get a hotel room a few times along the way.  I just don’t want to make reservations all along the way this time, that just means I have to be at a specific place each night.  So if I want to stop several times along the way to relax, take photos, or whatever!  I won’t feel rushed.  I’ll just play it by ear.  Only 1 specific date to be somewhere this trip.  I’ll need to be back home to go back to work (that’s a 4 letter word!) when my vacation is over.

I plan to start in Arizona with a ride to California and ride up the Coast along Highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH).  A landslide along the highway has closed a portion of it, so I’ll probably start somewhere near Monterey.  I’ve ridden the highway south of this point before, so that won’t be too disappointing!  I’ll ride through the Redwood National Park in Northern California before heading into Oregon and Washington along the PCH traveling through Olympic National Park just NW of Seattle, WA.  Then I’ll ride East through Washington, Idaho and into Montana to visit Glacier National Park (GNP).  Then on the way back home I’ll ride to Wyoming through Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park.  Then on through Utah and Zion National Park.  After that I’ll enter Arizona and ride just North of the Grand Canyon North Rim (see my last post for this ride) before arriving back home.  I’ll travel through 9 states and over 4,000 miles.

In preparation for the trip, I’ve attached my microphone and speaker set to my new motorcycle helmet.  I’ve had the mic/speaker set for years and never used it.   I haven’t tried it before, but I’d like to try using the CB Radio to talk with a couple other guys while riding.  I’ll be meeting up with my best friend (over 40 years now! Wow!) from high school in CA who will ride with me for a while along the PCH.  Then when I get to WA I’ll meet up with my brother and we’ll ride to GNP together.

Harley-Davidson
Mens Aura Ultra-Light Half Helmet, Size XL.  Part #98210-16VM/002L.
This is NOT a paid endorsement, it’s just for your information.

I just got this new helmet a couple of weeks ago.  It’s Harley-Davidsons new light weight model.  Fancy huh?  I didn’t realize how loose my old one was until I put on this new one.  The padding inside the old one had deteriorated and compressed over the years.

I’ve ridden through Yellowstone a couple years ago, but I’ve never been to Glacier National Park.  If you’re interested in what it looks like, just Google “Glacier National Park” and look at some of the photos.  I can hardly wait to see it in person.

Of course I’l be posting photos of the trip here on the blog.  So stay tuned for more…

While at the Laughlin River Run, I decided to take a look at Don Laughlin’s Automobile Collection.  It’s located at the Riverside Resort and Casino.  Here’s a few photos.

Laughlin River Run 2016

I didn’t take very many photos this year at the Laughlin River Run.  I’ve been here several times over the years, and for some reason taking photos wasn’t high on my priority list this time.

Anyway, here’s a few I took with my cell phone.

Tortilla Flat, Arizona

Posted in Arizona, Motorcycle, Motorcycle Rides, Motorcycles, Saloon, Tortilla Flat, Tortilla Flat AZ with tags , , , , , on April 21, 2016 by DRF

A nice day for another Motorcycle Ride.  This time to Tortilla Flat in Arizona.

Here’s a quote from their website:

Tortilla Flat is an authentic remnant of an old west town, nestled in the midst of the Tonto National Forest, in the Superstition Mountain RangeTortilla Flat started out as a stagecoach stop in 1904 and neither fire nor flood has been able to take away this historic stop along the Historic Apache Trail.”

The road from the West, State Road 88 is paved but VERY ROUGH and has a lot of curves and switch backs for about 20 miles.  It wasn’t a very enjoyable on my motorcycle.  The curves and switch backs would have been enjoyable if it wasn’t so rough.  This road needs some serious work.  The road leading out of town to the East towards Roosevelt Lake, is unpaved and I would Not recommend taking on a large motorcycle on it.

If you like Jalapeno and Chili, I recommend the Jalapeno Chili at the Superstition Saloon.  Very good (and hot!).

Canyon Lake – Tonto National Forest, AZ

Canyon Lake – Location: Less than an hour East of Phoenix, AZ in the Tonto National Forest.

Here’s a few photos I took on my ride over to Canyon Lake.  A nice day in Arizona for a motorcycle ride.  To get to this lake, you have to ride over 2, one-land bridges.  They have quite a few camping spaces available for campers.  There’s also a lot of boats at the marina.  I’m not sure why, but I didn’t take any photos of the camping sites or the marina where they had quite a few boats.  There was a restaurant and a Steam Boat were you can take a ride around the lake.
