Just putting a face to this motorcycle blog!

I usually ride alone on my motorcycle trips, so I don’t have many photos of myself.  Here’s one from my last ride out in Southern California.  I was on a ride along the Pacific Coast Highway.  This photo was taken in a cafe in Morro Bay, CA.

Sturgis 2014 – Planning for Another Ride

I plan on going to Sturgis again this year.  This will be my 2nd time.  Tent camping along the way, I plan on staying at Fort Tuthill campground in Flagstaff, AZ,  Arches National Park in Utah, and Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.  If I have time I’d also like to ride through Aspen, CO to take in the scenic views.  Each time I take a trip I try to take routes I haven’t been on before (unless I feel it was so nice I’d like to see it again).  I plan on going through Arches National Park which I rode through last year, simply because I enjoyed it so much.  If you plan on camping in any of the national parks, be sure to make your reservations well in advance.  They fill up quickly especially in the summer months.

My trip back to AZ will probably have to be along the Interstate Highways since it will be the quickest.  I would prefer to take the back roads through the little towns, scenic views, more relaxing atmosphere, etc…  But I could only get so much time off from work!

I stopped for these photos about 90 miles SE of Salt Lake City, UT along U.S. 6.  It’s just North of U.S. 191 near Castle Gate (now a ghost town) an old mining town in central Utah.  A large wood marker with fading lettering describes “Utah’s Coal Industry”.

IMG_5548As I headed North in Utah, I had a feeling I was going to get wet.  I had to keep going though.  After spending an extra day in Arches National Park, I was running behind schedule on my way to Washington.

The last photo in this series is what happened when I waited too long to put on my rain suit.  I was on the side of the freeway, in the dark, with rain and wind. The sky opened up all at once.  I think I rode directly into a gust front.  I’m not sure how I didn’t get blown off the road.  The wind was so strong I had to stand close to the bike because it was  being pushed backwards.  I had to hold it still.  I was standing too close to the pipes when I was putting it on.  I’ve never ridden in so much rain and wind in my life.  As much as I love to ride, this one particular evening was not so fun.  I was on my way to a campground I had reserved but decided to get a hotel instead.

The Historic Dewey Bridge.  Located along Highway 128 and the Colorado River in the Colorado Riverway Recreation Area.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

I was delighted to discover this historic bridge on my motorcycle ride.  Of course I had to stop and take some pictures!

This bridge was the longest suspension bridge in Utah until April 2008 when it was destroyed by a fire started by a child playing with matches.

IMG_5074My last stop in Arches National Park was “Delicate Arch”.  It was a 2 1/2 mile hike (5 miles round trip) and well worth it.  I arrived a little before sunset and stayed until sunset.  It was very cloudy to the west so I wasn’t able to get the sun setting on the arch.  I’ve heard you can get some amazing photos if the lighting is just right.  I’m still glad I was able to make the hike and take in the views.  It was nice and peaceful up on the mountain.

If you’ve been following my posts for the last couple of weeks, you know I’ve entered a lot from Arches National Park.  I don’t usually do this but I found it to be a very scenic place.  I hope I didn’t post to much.  Anyway, tomorrows post will some photos of my ride along the Colorado River along the Colorado River Recreation Area after I departed Moab, UT.
